Overview
This project covered a large area with a request for a modern-looking space that is easy to maintain and a durable patio attached to the property, removing the outdated wobbling slabs. Part of this patio also needed to be strong enough to park cars on. Newlook Surfacing approached this project with precision and skill to execute the customer’s vision.
The Job
Newlook Surfacing identified several key objectives for this project:
1.
Permeability:
To ensure the surface is as permeable and flood-resistant as possible.
2.
Visual Appeal:
Creating an incredible aesthetic that is modern and enhances the property’s value.
3.
Durability:
To install a strong and resilient surface that can provide additional parking space.
4.
Use-ability:
An area that is designed into the resin which is for hosting without taking away from the modern, seamless feel of the job.
Solution
A large stone resin patio was opted for due to its immense strength and permeability. It creates a very low maintenance option with a smaller porcelain patio used to create another space and break up the resin.
Stage 1:
The initial step was to excavate the current patio and dig down 8 inches from our finished level. We always excavate further than necessary to ensure the strongest base. For our sub-base we used type 3 stone, having fewer fines in it than type 1 this is a great sub-base for stone resin.
Stage 2:
We then installed a 20 square meter patio using Ivory porcelain slabs to break up the large area of resin and give the customer a useful area to entertain. Porcelain works excellently with stone resin as both give the property a very modern feel. We then used a limestone sett to edge the resin bound, create a neat break, and bring a more natural feel to the job.
Stage 3:
The next step was the lay the VubaMac Base, a system which is solely designed for Stone Resin Bound. It is a porous design and 57% stronger than traditional tarmac bases and when paired with Stone Resin it creates the most flood-resistant paving solution on offer. Permeability is guaranteed by using the VubaMac system which prevents water pooling, cracking, and moss growth. This is laid at 32mm thick with a stabilising mesh called SRM either side of it.
Stage 4:
The customer requested lighting to be installed around the resin-bound edging. To enable this to be installed by an electrician, we made sure to add beaming around the trim that would facilitate the lighting. This was an essential step as the beaming needed to be added before the top layer was laid to ensure there was sufficient space for the lighting to be installed once the patio was complete.
Stage 5:
Finally, the top layer of Vuba Stone Resin Bound was ready to be laid over the top. The chosen colour blend was Fort Sumter. The resin we use is BBA-approved 7.5kg kits, this is the gold standard of resin bound. The topcoat is first levelled out and then hand-trowelled to remove any marks and get it smooth. For guaranteed consistency across the large area, a power trowel tool was used to ensure an unparalleled level of precision and smoothness. Finally, we gently spray crushed glass over the top of the surface to give the driveway extra grip while not being visible to the naked eye.

Due to the expert installers and the high-quality materials, this customer has a full 15-year warranty. The best way to upgrade your driveway.
