‘Ardennes’ Resin with Charcoal Brick Border

195m2
Overview
Our client approached us with a request for a new, upgraded 195 sqm driveway to compliment their newly built home. To ensure the finish matched the property’s character, we collaborated closely to select a resin that was natural and stylish, while also bridging the gap between traditional charm and contemporary design. We chose ‘Ardennes’, a premium shade from VubaMac, renowned for its timeless appeal and ability to enhance modern architecture. As part of the specification, the client emphasised the importance of a fully porous base layer to guarantee durability and effective drainage. For this reason, we opted for VubaMac Resin, a trusted solution that combines strength with long‑lasting performance. In addition to the driveway installation, the client requested two soil beds framed with a charcoal brick border at the front of the property, adding both functionality and a touch of elegance to the overall design.

The Job
Newlook Surfacing identified 3 key objectives for this project:
1.
Permeability:
To ensure the surface is permeable and flood-resistant as well as being slip proof.
2.
Aesthetic:
The client wanted a modern aesthetic to pair with the newly built property.
3.
Durability:
A strong and resilient surface that can provide space for mulitple cars.

Solution
We decided on a fully porous base with a modern aesthetic, along with two soil beds to be installed with a charcoal brick border. Using the VubaMac base for ultimate durability and the top colour being ‘Ardennes’ for a refined modern look.
Stage 1:
The initial step was to excavate the current patio and dig down 8 inches from our finished level. We always excavate further than necessary to ensure the strongest base. For our sub-base we used type 3 stone, having fewer fines in it than type 1 this is a great sub-base for stone resin.
Stage 2:
We then installed the charcoal brick border for a contrast between the light colour of the driveway and the new outline of the large driveway. These were laid by hand in order to have an exact and ensure they would fit the boundaries exactly as required.
Stage 3:
The next step was the lay the VubaMac Base, a system which is solely designed for Stone Resin Bound. It is a porous design and 57% stronger than traditional tarmac bases and when paired with Stone Resin it creates the most flood-resistant paving solution on the market. Permeability is guaranteed by using the VubaMac system which prevents water pooling, cracking, and moss growth. This is laid at 32mm thick with a stabilising mesh ‘SRM’ either side of it.
Stage 4:
Finally, the top layer of Vuba Stone Resin ia ready to be laid over the top. We worked with the client to chose the colour ‘Ardennes’ as this was the perfect blend of natural, modern and bright the client was looking for. The topcoat is first levelled out and then hand-trowelled to remove any marks and get it smooth. For guaranteed consistency across the large area, a power trowel tool was used to ensure an unparalleled level of precision and smoothness. Finally, we gently spray crushed glass over the top of the surface to give the driveway extra grip while not being visible to the naked eye.
Stage 5:
After around 24 hours the driveway is able to withstand pedestrians and after only 48 hours the driveway is dry and ready to be used as normal! We take after pictures and upload them to our instagram in order for everyone to see the amazing transformation and craftsmanship!
