Overview
Newlook Surfacing took on this project after discussing the client’s unhappiness with the current state of the driveway. The client wanted to replace the cracked and unappealing tarmac with a more durable, stylish and sustainable alternative. The option of Stone Resin was superior for this job and with a general tidy up of the entire area, this driveway was able to be transformed.
The Job
Newlook Surfacing identified several key objectives for this project:
1.
Driveway Appeal: Transforming the previous unkept driveway, into a stylish and modern aspect of the property.
2.
Functional Space: Widening the access for extra vehicle space, which was previously limited due to bushes.
3.
Low Maintenance: Ensuring the driveway is durable whilst requiring little maintenance.
Solution
Stage 1: To begin, we excavated the tarmac driveway down 8 inches and cut the front wall down 1.5m to extend the entrance. For our sub-base, we used type 1 stone at 6 inches deep, this is fully compacted. With resin bound you need an edge to go to, after seeing plent of different types of edging blocks, the client opted for sandstone settss to go around the perimeter. We also installed a soil bed using the setts as an edge, allowing the plants to bring height and privacy. For the fence, we installed NeoTimber composite panels with concrete posts. Composite fences require very little maintenance, hold their colour well and look incredible.
Stage 2: In front of the door, we installed a bullnosed step with resin infill, which is a noticeable added detail. Once the sub-base, fence and edging bricks are in we are able to lay the resin. We use a system called VUBAMac. This system is the only system solely designed for stone resin bound. It is porous and 57% stronger than traditional tarmac bases. We lay this at 32mm thick with a stabilising mesh underneath and on top of it. This is the base for the top layer.
Stage 3: Finally, the top layer of UV stable resin bound was laid on top. The customer chose a blend called Charleston Stone. The resin we use is BBA approved 7.5kg kits, this is the gold standard of resin bound. The topcoat is first levelled out and then hand trowelled to remove any marks and get it smooth. We then gently spray crushed glass over the top of the surface to give the driveway a very grippy texture whilst not visible to the naked eye.
Results
Due to the method we used and the high-quality materials, this customer has the full 15-year warranty. The best way to upgrade your driveway.
